"Empire" actor Jussie Smollett has reported being assaulted in Chicago on Tuesday by two men hurling racial and homophobic slurs at him and wrapping a rope around his neck in what police are investigating as a possible hate crime, officials said.

Smollett, 36, had just landed in town from New York and was out getting a bite to eat at about 2 a.m. CT (3 a.m. ET) on East North Lower Water Street, in the upscale neighborhood of Streeterville, is when two men attacked him, the actor told police.

Two "unknown offenders approached him and gained his attention by yelling out racial and homophobic slurs towards him," according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department. "The offenders began to batter the victim with their hands about the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim."

The chemical is believed to be bleach, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

"At some point during the incident, one of the offenders wrapped a rope around the victim's neck," the statement continued. "The offenders fled the scene."

In a recording obtained by emergency-services feed aggregator Broadcastify, a dispatcher repeated information she gleaned from Smollett's friend who called in the attack.

"He's supposed to be well-known, requesting a report and said a noose was placed over the friend's neck," the dispatcher relayed to first responders.

Smollett, who is black and gay, took himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

Terrible IF it happened. There are a number of anomalies in the story such as what was he doing going out at 2 am in Chicago? How and why was he targeted? Who in their right mind would refer to Chicago as MAGA country (as he later claimed)? Why didn't Smollett report the attack immediately, instead of having an associate do it hours later?

Questions aside, this "attack" has become a cause celebre among the correct set. After all, Smollett ism both black and gay, a combination hard to beat these days (no pun intended). Police are investigating. We shall see.

I doubt the Smollett event was for publicity, though of course he will get a great deal. I, along with others, suspect he hit on the wrong guy, or it was a drug deal (robbery?) gone bad, but he can't admit the truth.

But this year, the number of actors noosed and bleached at 2 a.m. already has hit an all-time high.

The final piece of the Jussie Smollett assault story just hit the skids.

Actor Jussie Smollett arrived in Chicago on Monday night. He was out to get fast food at 2 a.m. when he was allegedly attacked by two Trump supporters in MAGA hats who recognized him in the freezing cold, beat him, poured bleach on him and put a noose around his neck.

It was -15 to -30 degrees wind chill on Tuesday morning.

Smollett said the mysterious MAGA men poured bleach on his head but bleach freezes at 18 degrees.
The weather on Tuesday was a low of -9 degrees.

Jessie Smollett said he was assaulted and suffered a cracked rib but condo surveillance video shows Smollett walking past security to the elevator without telling them he had just been attacked by thugs who “beat the hell out of him” and “broke his ribs.”

On Saturday Smollet admitted his rib was not broken.

And Jussie was carrying his Subway sandwich — he saved it during the alleged assault!

Jussie claims he got his ass beat in -15 degree weather but at least they didn’t take his sandwich!
