One of my favorites, Mark Steyn, offers his analysis on what this all means. Mark doesn't take a position on the independence vote but one thing he noted grabbed my attention:

"In 1897 Britishness looked like a permanent feature of the map. But it's had a rough half-century, and mostly at the hands of the British state. For half-a-century, it has been associated with - and, indeed, taught to three generations of schoolchildren as principally responsible for - all the worst -isms in the dictionary: imperialism, colonialism, racism. You can understand the attraction to England's Celtic fringe in casting off the unloveliness of Britishness and presenting oneself as the last victims of Anglo imperialism."

Reminded me of that oft quoted remark of C. S. Lewis (quoted recently on here, as a matter of fact): “We make men without chests and expect from them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.”

Both here and in England certain intellectuals, the media, and the entertainment industry have spent inordinate amounts of time and effort telling us how rotten the histories of our respective countries are, and the poison fruits of this effort are abundantly evident.

If I recall correctly a number of Brits, led by novelist John le Carre and the leftist publication The Guardian, issued a statement urging Americans to elect the then Democrat candidate running against GW. Americans were outraged by this foreign interference in one of our elections and rightly so. The same situation pertains today only in the reverse.

Polls show Scotland’s independence referendum, set for Thursday, too close to call, but Charles Krauthammer would not be surprised if Unionists win out.

“I think what’s really happened here: You had a poll last week showing succession winning, and now you have the latest poll showing a real tightening. I think in these situations,” Krauthammer said on Wednesday’s Special Report, “there is often the desire to go independent, and then at the last second, when you think about all the implications . . . I think there would be a counter reaction to stay within the U.K.” He noted the serious economic consequences Scotland will face should it choose to become independent.

“My guess would be that it will be really close but . . . they might at the end flinch.”

Well pollsters over there are already saying that they think this even result is misleading and that this will break heavy one way or another. Guess we will find out tomorrow.

Question for anyone who knows: if the Scots do vote for independence, do they get to control their borders and limit immigration? Just wondering.
