The FBI will re-open its investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, bureau director James Comey said in a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday.

"In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation … I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation," he wrote.

In September, Comey defended his agency's decision to not press criminal charges in the investigation into Clinton's use of a private email sever. Documents related to the case were released just before the Labor Day weekend and included a summary of Clinton's July interview with the FBI about her private email server, as well as a detailed investigative summary of the case.

The FBI language in the letter to Congress makes clear that new evidence has been discovered and thus will be reviewed — meaning FBI agents will read these emails. It is unusual for the FBI to tell Congress it is looking over newly discovered evidence in a criminal inquiry that was otherwise closed.

Algernonpj, even if the new investigation turns out to be just another farce, severe damage to Hilliary has been done just by the fact this has been announced about a week before the election. So far as I know, the Clinton camp has yet to address this new development. What can they say?

I have noted this morning there are a number of stories emerging which are critical of Comey or the renewed investigation.

The only criticisms I recall after Comey listed the offenses of Hilliary and then failed to indict her came from right wing extremists. Funny how that no longer holds.

This guy was once seriously considered as a Presidential candidate, by the Democrats, of course.

Dean, Sanders. Vermont certainly produces some interesting characters, does it not?

I can't imagine that Hillary could get ANYTHING positive out of this and Comey can only have egg all over his face - as he should - so this leaves me to believe it is about something BIG.

I think the Agents themselves may have been close to mutiny and/or the impending Wikileaks dump borders on treason.

Comey would not have been able to get away with not informing Congress since when he closed the case he promised to keep them apprised of change.

IF he had courage at the beginning and didn't waste an entire year doing nothing we would not be in this place. Still, the wheels of justice grind slowly, yet they grind exceedingly fine...
