Why we need a prerequisite for elected officials to have at least passed 5th grade....
ZitatRep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D., Texas) declared the U.S. Constitution to be 400 years old Wednesday on the House floor, which would mean it was signed in 1614.
“Maybe I should offer a good thanks to the distinguished members of the majority, the Republicans, my chairman and others, for giving us an opportunity to have a deliberative constitutional discussion that reinforces the sanctity of this nation and how well it is that we have lasted some 400 years, operating under a constitution that clearly defines what is constitutional and what is not,” she said.
That would be seven years after Jamestown, Virginia became America’s first permanent English settlement.
Lee is off by only 173 years. It was adopted on Sep. 17, 1787.
While attending college in Houston I lived in this woman's district, but not with her as the rep but another person her predecessor, Craig Washington a real gem of a fellow. I even ran against him, as a Libertarian, for a seat in the Texas House. Somehow, in a district which was, like, 90% black, I didn't win. I have no idea what went wrong.
Incidentally of Washington the Wikipedia article on Shirley states, Washington had come under fire for opposing several projects that would have benefited the Houston area. Uh, no, that wasn't the problem.Craig had some ethical issues arising out of his law practice and that what was done him in.
I met Craig's predecessor, the hard core Leftist Mickey Leland, and debated Washington, but never knew Shirley (much to my chagrin; she's a hell of a woman and an outstanding intellect).

You got almost 13K votes against this guy in that district running as a Libertarian. That has to be worth something. You also are mentioned in Wikipedia. I'm not even mentioned in my local phone book.
