They refer to these Islamic barbarians from Boko Haram as "religious extremists" and as a "religious militant group". And the blame for their savagery is pinned on the greed of the Nigerian government? Italics from Wiki "Anyone who is not governed by what Allah has revealed is among the transgressors". Boko Haram promotes a version of Islam which makes it "haram", or forbidden, for Muslims to take part in any political or social activity associated with Western society.
*********************** Back in April, more than 200 girls were kidnapped from their school by the religious extremist group Boko Haram in Nigeria on April 15th. Now, for more than 60 of their families, their nightmare is over.
It appears that they escaped while their captors were engaged in an attack on a military barrack and police headquarters in Damboa. This escape brings the total number of kidnapped girls to 219.
The escape underscores the failure of the Nigerian government to even put out a token effort to address the issue of the religious militant group. A local group, The Kibaku Area Development Association, has called upon the government, and released numerous statements on the ineffectiveness, or non-existance, of government action. As their chairman Pogu Bitrus put it,
Security and defense is mainly provided by the local vigilante (who are ill-equipped) and the police while the soldiers in Chibok sit by and watch villagers being helplessly massacred in their homes, farms and in places of worship.
The inability or unwillingness of the federal government to provide adequate security to Chibok (Kibaku) nation following the abduction of the girls leaves us with no option than to call on the United Nations to use its apparatus to come to our aid and protect us from the imminent annihilation as a people.
The humanitarian effort to find the girls, without the support of the Nigerian government, has not made much headway. As for Boko Haram itself, it was formed in response to the rampant corruption within the Nigerian government.
With an ineffective government, the population formed local militias, vigilantes who have said enough is enough. They have proven to be the most effective deterrent against the reigious zealots of Boko Haram.
The girls who have escaped are a reason to celebrate, and a demonstration of the tactical mis-step by the Boko Haram. The kidnapping has brought international pressure against them, and helped shore up the corrupt government which they are in opposition to. If Boko Haram had any intelligence, they would release the girls immediately, for otherwise the eyes of the world will continue to fall upon them, and not upon the greed of the Nigerian ministers.
