This is the moment a game of hide and seek went disastrously wrong when a seven-year-old boy found himself stuck inside a washing machine .

The young lad thought he had found the ultimate hiding place when he crawled inside a the metal drum - but soon found out why it was a terrible idea.

The boy, who has not been named, became lodged inside the laundry appliance at his home in Kharkov in eastern Ukraine.

After attempts to remove himself, he found he could not get out again and ended up shouting for help.

None of his family were able to pull the youngster out of the washing machine, so they called emergency services for help.

Four firefighters arrived and, after surveying the situation, came up with the idea of covering the boy in sunflower oil or Vaseline.

And it paid off, as moments after it was applied the youngster suddenly slid out of the machine.

Earlier, they used a plastic fan to give him more air as he was feeling claustrophobic in the confines of the washing machine.

Once free, the rescuers checked him over and - after they were satisfied he had not been hurt - handed him over to his relieved mother.
