Lacking leadership, young talent and unable to relate to swathes of Americans across the country, comparisons were drawn with Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party - Barack Obama even warned the party not to "disintegrate" in the same way Labour had after its 2015 election defeat.
However, less than three months into Mr Trump's chaotic presidency, the Democrats have a chance to begin the road to recovery on Tuesday with a 'special election' in the leafy, affluent suburbs of northern Atlanta.
"The demographic most opposed to President Trump is not a racial minority, but a cultural elite." Daniel Greenberg
"Failure to adequately denounce Islamic extremism, not only denies the existence of an absolute moral wrong but inherently diminishes our chances of defeating it." Tulsi Gabbard
"It’s a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds and beliefs, who want and expect our government to serve the people, and serve the people it will." Donald Trump's Victory Speech 11/9/16
