Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has taken to bashing Donald Trump in recent interviews, calling him “a faker” who lacks consistency, criticizing him for not releasing his tax returns and even joking about moving to New Zealand if the presumptive Republican presidential nominee wins in November.
Trump fired back today, telling The New York Times that her comments were “highly inappropriate” and calling for her to apologize to her fellow justices.
“He is a faker,” Ginsburg said of Trump on Monday on CNN. “He has no consistency about him. He says whatever comes into his head at the moment. He really has an ego ... How has he gotten away with not turning over his tax returns? The press seems to be very gentle with him on that.”
The 83-year-old justice’s scathing remarks have earned jeers from some legal experts who consider them inappropriate political commentary by a sitting justice and applause from others who see them as an important dose of candor...
Just another example of how standards of proper behavior are undermined from the Left. SC justices just don't do this sort of thing, or didn't until RBG. Technically she violated the Code of Conduct for U.S. Judges, but guess what? The SC has exempted itself from its provisions much like Congress exempts itself from the same laws they impose on the rest of us. Great system, huh? Elitism? What elitism? Still the exemption ought not matter and Ginsburg should have observed it on principle.
But, of course, she hasn't, and now the old battleax really should resign. Which raises questions not only about her sense of decency, but also her motivation. Ginsburg is old and frail. She was sure to leave the court soon anyway, but if this was her swan song, she may have done it as a way to get in a cheap shot at Trump while providing Obama another opportunity to name her replacement before his Presidency ends. The fly in that ointment is, of course, there is already one vacancy on the court and the Republicans won't fill it. Two vacancies, otoh, may tip the balance as the Republican leadership turns to jello when confronted by bad publicity. It could be, too, RBG is simply in her dotage and has trouble controlling her impulses. Either way, she should go.
