Maureen O'Hara, the flame-haired Hollywood actor from Ireland, has died aged 95 Her family confirmed in a statement that the Irish-American film actress and singer passed away peacefully in her sleep By Lucy Clarke-Billings 24 Oct 2015
The actor Maureen O’Hara, famed for her flaming red hair and her role in The Quiet Man, has died aged 95.
Her family confirmed in a statement that the Irish-American film actress and singer passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday.
“It is with a sad heart that we share the news that Maureen O’Hara passed away today in her sleep of natural causes,” a statement from the Fitzsimons family read.
“Maureen was our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family as they celebrated her life listening to music from her favorite movie, The Quiet Man.”
The family said that as an actor, O’Hara brought “unyielding strength and sudden sensitivity to every role she played”.
O'Hara came to Hollywood to star in the 1939 The Hunchback of Notre Dame and went on to a long career.
She became known as the Queen of Technicolor because of the camera's love affair with her vivid hair, pale complexion and fiery nature.
She also appeared in Miracle on 34th Street, the classic 1947 Christmas story in which O'Hara was little Natalie Wood's skeptical mother and among those charmed by Edmund Gwenn as a man who believed he was Santa Claus.
She is survived by her daughter, Bronwyn FitzSimons, her grandson, Conor FitzSimons and two great-grandchildren.
God rest her soul. The article only mentions 3 of her many, many movies, stating she was famed for "The Quiet Man", a truly great movie I highly recommend to all. One of many she made with John Wayne.
I read her autobiography years ago in which she discussed her friendship with Wayne and their mutually bizarre relationship with John Ford who directed many of her films, including "The Quiet Man".
