Colin Kaepernick benched by 49ers after dismal 3 quarters vs. Bears

Dec 5, 2016 By Nick Wagoner

CHICAGO -- After a dismal three-plus quarters of offense, San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly benched quarterback Colin Kaepernick for Blaine Gabbert early in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 26-6 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Kaepernick, who entered the game having thrown for more yards in the past four games than in any four-game stretch in his career, struggled mightily in the cold and snow of Soldier Field.

At the time the Niners pulled him for Gabbert, Kaepernick was 1-of-5 passing for 4 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions for a passer rating of 39.6. He was also sacked five times for 25 yards, leaving the Niners with negative-21 net passing yards and a 24-6 deficit at the time of his departure.

San Francisco entered the game with the NFL's 30th-ranked passing offense.

In the process, Kaepernick became the first quarterback in NFL history to be sacked five times and throw for fewer than 5 yards in a game, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

John Lynch: 49ers would have cut Kaepernick if he hadn’t opted out

By Mike Florio, May 31, 2017

One of the popular narratives regarding Colin Kaepernick’s lingering unemployment is that he has only himself to blame after opting out of his 49ers contract. This flawed assumption overlooks the fact that the 49ers would have cut Kaepernick if he hadn’t opted out.

49ers G.M. John Lynch said so on Wednesday, in a PFT Live interview to be aired later this week.

“Yes,” Lynch said regarding whether Kaepernick would have been cut if he hadn’t opted out, “and we had that conversation with him. So I don’t want to characterize it as he made a decision to leave here.

Imperfect 10: 49ers set franchise record for consecutive losses

By CAM INMAN | November 27, 2016

This 70th anniversary season has seen the 49ers do something none of their worst predecessors could: lose a 10th consecutive game.

The 49ers (1-10) had their surprising comeback bid come up just short Sunday and they lost to the Miami Dolphins 31-24 at Hard Rock Stadium.
