#1 Owyhee County has own frustrations with BLM by ThirstyMan 04.05.2014 23:26

Iím writing this letter in response to the Bundy saga in Nevada and our own issues we are having here in Owyhee County.

The Bundys state that they do not recognize the Bureau of Land Managementís authority on the land, claiming instead it belongs to the state of Nevada. I donít totally disagree with them on that, but the federal government is claiming these lands as public lands.

My issue with this is that they have not paid for the resources consumed by their livestock.

We are experiencing numerous issues here with the BLM in that our ranchers are facing 50 percent reductions in their AUMs (animal unit monthly) and having season of use changed to the dead of winter where they cannot graze because of snow. The big difference here is our ranchers are paying for the resources and following the rules as they are supposed to do.

Ranchers here in Owyhee County are now having to litigate against the BLM to at least maintain their AUMs.

We Owyhee County commissioners meet monthly with the BLM. We have asked them repeatedly to coordinate with the county on these issues, and repeatedly they say that they are, but I say they absolutely are not.

They use science from Arizona and New Mexico to base some of their decisions on grazing conditions here. I find that quite interesting, when we donít share the same climate region, weather patterns, grasses or other forages.

The BLM does not use any of the recommendations that the county puts forward.

We have a rangeland consultant at every meeting. He is Dr. Chad Gibson. Since I have been a county commissioner, the BLM has not used one of his recommendations.

The social economic aspect of the decisions of the BLM have not been addressed, either. If the decisions by the BLM are upheld in court, the economic effect on the county will be devastating. Currently, research is being done to determine the financial toll this will take on our county resources.

Iím asking the citizens of Owyhee County to contact our state and U.S. senators and representatives and put pressure on them to stop this out-of-control agency. We can make a difference if we all work together and show the bureaucrats we are united behind our ranchers, and we will support them.

* Kelly R. Aberasturi, District 2 Owyhee County Commissioner

Kelly, did it ever occur to you that the BLM does not negotiate in good faith whatever you do, pay their fees or not pay their fees? Their polices and demands destroyed cattle ranching where the Bundys live in NV and, given your letter, will soon start doing so in your area of ID. This isn't by accident.

The explanation for their backward and destructive policies may lie in the Obama administration's subservience to the Climate Change/environmentalist cabal. Remember how it was recently alleged cows produce a great deal of the methane which adversely impacts the ecosphere? Solution: get rid of cattle.

I am not saying I know for sure that is why they are deliberately aiming to hurt cattle farmers like they did in NV and are doing elsewhere, but it may well be a major contributing factor. One thing for sure, Obama & Co are indifferent to the well being of cattle ranchers and are using the BLM as a tool to do them harm.

I have tracked the origins of the change in the BLM from management to conservation further back than Obama, 1980's in fact. I'm getting links ready to post an article and interesting links to a document from 1991. 1991 is just before the BLM began changing their contracts with ranchers with a goal of driving them out of business.

I don't doubt you are correct but the Nazi policy of exterminating the physically and mentally handicapped in Germany didn't begin with Hitler. It began with German medical and psychiatric groups in the 1920s who advocated it because they knew the handicapped couldn't be happy with their lot, so euthanizing them was an act of compassion; to say nothing of how much it cost the German state to house and support such individuals (at one point called "useless mouths").

Hitler didn't create this inhumane attitude but he did create the legal structure would made their elimination possible. So, too, with the BLM. They may have plotting their destructive policies for quite some time, but Obama has created the conditions in which it can act so aggressively.

This is a good point.

I see Obama more in terms of being the icing on the cake. He didn't as much create the conditions as take a giant leap "forward" . That giant leap and the fact it is being tolerated by those with the power to do something about it is the result of decades of persistence by the enemy within supplanting our traditional ethics and culture.

For example our freedom and property rights have been eroded by the Civil Rights Act, the War on Drugs, Gun Control, the Patriot Act, wide open borders, lax immigration policies, . . . and much more - all done with 'good intentions'. The water in the pot has been getting warmer and warmer. Obama's job has been to community organize it up to boil. He was well chosen for the job.
