KHOU-TV, Houston 10:34 a.m. EDT May 26, 2015

HOUSTON — As severe storms moved through Southeast Texas again late Monday into early Tuesday morning, high water and flooding made many of Houston's roads impassable, prompting officials to urge residents to stay home.

The fourth-largest city in the USA is suffering some of its worst flooding in years as much of the city and its freeway system are under

On Interstate 10, one of Houston's busiest freeways, a trip that is usually a five-minute drive to downtown, was virtually impassable.

The heavy rain was causing a traffic nightmare with miles of stuck cars. Some people either slept in their cars or abandoned them. Some drivers had to contend with water inside their cars.

Emergency officials spent the overnight hours rescuing stranded drivers.

A flash flood watch is in effect for the entire Houston area until noon Central. The forecast for Tuesday calls for more rain.

Harris County Flood District advised residents not to leave their homes Tuesday, while about 20 school districts announced closures or delays because of the severe flooding.
